If someone said this about your dog, "Oh my, that must be the ugliest dog in the world!", wouldn't you be insulted and ready to fight? Well, if you're one of the many dog owners who entered their "beauty-challenged" canine into the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, you might respond with "Why thank you very much".

For 21 years, the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest has been held at the colosseum in Petaluma, California, as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair. Along with the title of “The World’s Ugliest Dog,” the winner’s owner gets a $1,000. The 2009 winner was Pabst, a boxer mix owned by Miles Egstad of Citrus Heights, California.

So what variety of
dog breeds
and mixes are popular ugly dogs? Perhaps the best "ugliest" dog breed is the "Hairless" variety of the Chinese Crested dog. The hairless has soft, human-like skin, patches of fur on its paws and tail and long, flowing hair on its head. The Chinese Crested dog breed have what is called a "primitive mouth". This means that most of their tooth are pointy. In fact, this variety of dog breed is known to have missing teeth or teeth that are prone to decay. Many of the Chinese Crested dogs tongue protrudes from the mouth because there are no teeth to hold it in the mouth. This characteristic is considered an asset in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest.
Other variety of dog breeds that entered the World's Ugliest Dog Contest include a Chihuahua-Chinese Crested dog mixed, a Corgi-Collie mix and even boxer-mix.
The old adages "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and "Beauty is skin deep" must be true.
Well I'm glad to hear that losing teeth is part of the breed. I always thought the owners pulled them out to make their dogs uglier.
